Let’s be honest, if you’re heading to Puerto Banus then you are heading to a Mediterranean playground for the rich and famous. This is the town for star-spotting and luxury yachting. The place to be if you’re hoping for a taste of opulence and a bit of champagne nightlife.
Located to the south-west of Marbella, Puerto Banus is a marina-based town whose name has grown to become synonymous with exclusivity and style; a major hot-spot for those holiday-makers who want a sprinkle of glamour and luxury to their sun-drenched days and party hard nights. Indeed, over the course of the past quarter century the town has grown to be one of the high-end locales anywhere in Europe.
A Little Bit of History
It was always destined to become a resort for a ‘certain’ type of clientele. By which we mean, loaded with money and not at all embarrassed to show it.
The town is named after Jose Banus, a prominent property developer who played a significant role in the area’s development. Banus’ idea was to create an exclusive resort for the rich, famous and elite of local society in which to holiday in peace, comfort and among their own wealthy kind.
Originally intended to be founded upon grand skyscrapers along the coast, what eventually emerged was a resort designed on a more traditional Mediterranean style, albeit to the higher levels of luxury developing a marina which seemed to find the perfect blend between chic and refined tradition.
The resort was opened as it meant to go on, with a lavish party filled with glamour and A list guests from Hugh Hefner and Roman Polanski to Princess Grace of Monaco.
In the proceeding forty years the resort has grown on its reputation, readily attracting a glamourous crowd of visitors and indeed residents. A regular destination for film stars and actors, royalty and rockers, Puerto Banus is now one of Europe’s premier holiday destinations attracting over 5 million visitors per year. Luxury hotels and apartments reside among the exclusive designer boutiques, overlooking the stunning marina and offering views out across the Med to the shores of Africa. A lavish, opulent resort for the wealthy and the well-known, Puerto Banus offers sumptuous dining, some extravagant retail opportunities, glitzy night-life and some of the most luxurious surroundings in which to unwind from the stresses of life.
Benefitting from its prime location on the Mediterranean coast of Andalucía, and with the unique micro-climate that affords the area with pleasant year round temperatures the resort is a model of sophistication, teeming in the sense of wealth. A sprawl of low-level traditional Mediterranean white buildings that are home to a vast array of expensive shops, restaurants and bars; all overlooking the wide, glittering marina; adorned by a range of some of the world’s most expensive yachts that simply have to be seen to be believed. You wouldn’t have won any these beauties on Bullseye, that’s for sure.
At night the town comes to life to the rumble of the type of cars you’d see in a Bond film and the steady throb of music from a range of bars and clubs that line the streets and waterside.
As it was envisioned to be, Puerto Banus remains today a glittering beacon of class and style upon the shores of the Costa Del Sol.
