La Liga Update: Barsa’s blonds have less fun as Real pull three points clear

La liga updateHere’s our La Liga update for this week. Barcelona gave a lacklustre display that allowed a spritely Alavés side to win 1-2 at the Camp Nou. Dyed-in-the-wool Barsa fans are blaming their manager Luis Enrique and players like Messi and Suarez for easing off before their Champions League tie on Tuesday. But our Spain Event office chit-chat is asking: “why would you have to rest up to prepare for a UEFA Champions match against Celtic at home ? And did most of the tourists at that match know the difference between Alavés and Dani Alvés ?”.  They do now anyway…

Our verdict is that Barcelona didn’t know how to swallow Arda’s absence and assimilate Neymar on his return from that evangelist hair salon tour in Brazil. Just when we thought Messi was becoming less blond. Alavés deserve their plaudits though – they knew how to hit on the break, and made a bit of a berk of the mighty Barça and their “final de verano” defence. Hats off to Alavés manager Mauricio Pelligrino.

La Liga Update Matchday 3: Barcelona 1 (Mathieu) – Alavés 2 (Iverson, Gómez)

Meanwhile, it was business as usual at the Bernabeu with Real Madrid’s power and pace blowing the Osasuna defence away: the Pamplona men scored two but looked pretty pleased to hold Zizou’s men to 5. Ronaldo, possibly smarting from only scoring one of the five, took the opportunity afterwards to blow his own trumpet, suggesting how wonderful he is etc etc….

La Liga Update Matchday 3: Real Madrid 5 (Ronaldo, Danilo, Ramos, Pepe, Modric) – Osasuna 2 (Riera, Garcia)

Meanwhile Atletico got back to performing with a 0-4 away victory against Celta in Vigo. With Real Madrid on 9 points, Barcelona on 6, Atletico, who drew both of their first two matches, are now in seventh place on 5 points.

La Liga Update Matchday 3: Celta Vigo 0 – Atletico Madrid 4 (Griezmann 2, Koke, Correa).
