For a scenic Madrid cycle day out, Pierre chose the May Day and May 2nd holidays to visit Madrid and tour the museums and sites. The group wanted something slightly energetic (and healthy) after some clubbing and restaurants the night before. They visited the top museums like Thyssen and Prado and we also laid on guided tour of tantalising Toledo, only 35 mins from Madrid by luxury coach. What Pierre’s group particularly enjoyed, however, was a fantastic bicycle trip that we prepared for them.
Pierre’s group had a ball cycling in Madrid in splendid May.
The trip took in the historic sites of Old Madrid on one of those cosmic blue-sky days when Madrid seems to be nearer the moon than anwhere else on the planet. Appropriately enough for a group that had been schooled on Velazquez and Goya during the day at the city’s best museums, it was this quality of blue in the Madrid sky that attracted the world’s greatest painters and produced so much fine art. Funnily enough Madrid’s dramatic blue skyscape is a big challenge to photographers, who choose to work at a time of day when the light softens (just before twilight) – oh, the same time of day that all Madrileños are heading out to the tapas bars…fans of Madrid cycle style will be well pleased!
A Madrid cycle trip to take in all the sights
The Madrid cycle and tour fraternity would recommend the following itinerary, especially for a large mixed group like Pierre’s (some were keen cyclists and some non cyclists):
Plaza Mayor (16th Century) – Palacio Real (Madrid’s stunning royal palace) – Views of Casa de Campo Park from the Egyptian Temple (we’ll let you work that one out!) – Puerta del Sol – Paseo del Prado
This is a fantastic catch-all trip, immensely rewarding, and healthy!
