The capital of Portugal is awesome. There’s no other word for it. Well maybe a less American one. Lisbon is brilliant. Bloody brilliant. It has everything. There are so many things to do in Lisbon that I could write this blog for ages and ages (don’t worry, I’m not going to). I’ve been around most of Spain and Portugal and Lisbon is definitely in my top 5 places to go. Why you may ask.. I hope you are sitting comfortably because I’m going to tell you…
Things to do in Lisbon: Bums on Beach
Firstly, the beaches. I would hazard a guess that there are not many capital cities in Europe that have beaches. And let’s face it cities are all the better for it when they do. Stepping away from the busy streets, bars and restaurants and hitting the beach with a bunch of mates and some obligatory cold beers is one of my favourite ways to roll. It’s also the best place to check out the local talent. After all, everyone loves a bit of bird watching. And if you wanna get wet (get your minds out of the gutter!) you can do some really cool water sports as well. Kayaking, surfing, paddle board all fun and not too difficult.
I loved paddle board, much more fun than it looked, the best exercise, you know the kind that is really good for your but doesn’t actually feel like exercise, and a great way to cruise along and check out the coastline. Speaking of a cruise. One of the best things to do in Lisbon are the boats trips. They’re awesome. Damn, there’s that word again. They are though. Totally. My mates and I hired a private yacht, not nearly as pricy as you might think. It was a very cool way to spend a few hours. And drinks beer. I would like my own some day… Anyway, I digress. What were we talking about? Ah yes, Lisbon and its awesomeness.
Things to do in Lisbon: Lively Lisbon
Bars, bars and more bars. Who doesn’t like them? Weirdos that’s who. Lisbon is one of the best places for a bar crawl, which is personally one of my all time favourite hobbies. People, music and alcohol in some of the coolest bars I’ve seen = a perfect combination. The old red like district is a must do, see, drink in and experience place. It’s always buzzing and everyone is proper friendly. I love going back there and could spend all my time there if my liver didn’t need a holiday every now and then. The old trams rumble by here at all hours and Lisboetas (I may have made that word up) really know how to party. Plus beer is cheap. Very cheap.
Things to do in Lisbon: Lisbon Boozing
Speaking of drink it may not be very manly but its damn good – the caipirinha. I can not write about things to do in Lisbon without mentioning the famous portuguese cocktail (well technically Brazilian but who cares). It is a must try. They are seriously good and occasionally deadly, as being tight on alcohol is not something Lisbon is known for! The other thing you can’t miss here is the fish. It’s a main dish in Portugal and Lisbon being its capital they like to go all out on the fish front. It is really, really tasty.
The only downside I experienced in Lisbon were the hills. Well, the downside was not a problem just the up. Being a born and breed Londonite hills are not something I’m generally confronted with. They confused me. So we hired a tuk tuk to solve the dilemma. You can do this too or hire buggies, or bikes if you’re fit, or jump on the cool, old school trams. Taxis are really cheap too. So the only negative is easily solved. Job done.
Things to do in Lisbon: Stag Perfect
Lisbon has a perfect mix of old charm, cobbled streets, amazing buildings and a trendy,
exciting, up all night party atmosphere. It’s got beaches, a beautiful river, great restaurants and it’s cheap. This place is getting more and more popular for hen and stag do’s so get in there quick and believe me you will not be disappointed with this amazing place. Myself and the other lads loved and it and will be back as soon as our livers have recovered.
