Porto Tapas – delicious petiscos are all the rage

Try Porto tapas or Petiscos and you’ll have a notch on your culinary belt. Especially in the north of Portugal (which shares a lot if common tradition, language and foodie culture with north-east Spain’s Galicia region) they won’t let you tell them that Spain is in any way preeminent in terms of tasty tidbits.

Here the seafood snacks, olives, spicy bits of pork and potato are just are rich, lavish and delicious. One thing The Spain Event can vouch for, and approve of in the highest terms… you will find that Spain and Portugal have in common the need to wolf these mean little bites down with large quantities of beer or wine. Ah, that’s better!

Foodies will love petiscos in Porto

As a shining light on the Atlantic Ocean, Porto has a rich supply of possibly the world’s best seafood and fresh fish. All caught locally and recently. The means that these delicacies are unbeatable in this part of the world. But…Porto and Northern Portugal also excels for meats, spicy sausages, beans and even tripe, a local delicacy and a rather nice one to guarantee a hot-blooded hen or stag dos!

Porto tapas are served on small dishes, usually standing up (that’s you, not the dishes). You’ll find denizens of über-trendy Porto eateries loving the whole petisco scene. And guess what, unlike your favourite Birmingham (supposed) tapas chain, this the real Macao (or McCoy).

All washed down with cold beer or wine

Petiscos are sometimes cold, such as mixed olives and cheese, or hot: calamares (fried squid). Porto’s version often includes dishes like octopus salad, chickpeas and codfish, fried garlic shrimp or typical Portuguese sausages like alheira, morcela or chouriço. Make sure you slurp it all down with some local fresh cold white or red wine from Porto (we don’t recommend Port as such with the meal, but get some down your neck afterwards by all means)

With so many morsels to choose from, you might need some guidance…our tour doubles as a great bar crawl and adds up to a full dinner as well!
