The cool wind, known as the Solano, helps to keep temperatures down. Rainfall is sparse, only about 450 mm per year and the vines receive about 2,800 hours of sunlight per year. The Bobal grape variety occupies over 75% of the vineyards. Authorized red varieties include Bobal, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Authorized whites are Planta Nova (or Tardana), Macabeo, Merseguera, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. So bottoms up!

Valencia Vineyard Visit & Wine Tasting

Visit one of Valencia’s finest wineries and taste great wine on The Spain Event’s Valencia Vineyard Visit! We will take you on a half-day tour of one of the unspoilt gems of Spanish tippling: a Valencia vineyard visit. You’ll have a vine old time and probably pop a cork or two. The ruta del vino or wine route of the D.O. (denominación de origen or appellation) of Utiel-Requena is a delight to the eye and to the palate.

The wine from this Valencia region comes mainly from the unique and hardy Bobal grape variety. On our Valencia wine tour you will learn all about the varieties of wines produced, sample them with an expert and have a chance to buy a few for a tipple back in the hotel room. And you can accompany this visit with either a full lunch or an appetising aperitif.

The wines from this region are a delight, typically with a fresh and appley nose, crisp, attacking and slightly flinty on the palate, and often delightfully long. Colour ranges beguilingly from pale green whites through salmon pink freshrosés to deep mahogany reds. Still largely unknown in the UK, this wine is one of Spain’s favourites and after our vineyard tour you’ll certainly be ready to go one up on wine snobs back home!

Valencia Wines

Wine distilleries are known to have been producing in this area since the 15th century. The predominant grape, Bobal is famous for resisting some of the blights like phylloxera virus that have affected other wine regions across Europe. The region is located in the transition zone between the Mediterranean coast and high plateau (Castilla La Mancha) of Central Spain, with high lime-content soil, low in organic matter. The climate is continental with long hot, dry summers and cold winters and can be severe for Spain. Nevertheless, the vines are well adapted to such a climate and there is a Mediterranean influence (only 70 km as the crow flies to the Sea).
